The Weekly Laundry Routine That’ll Keep You On Top Of Laundry All The Time

September 2, 2025 · 101 Tips Series, Homepage, Lifestyle, Routines

Laundry is one of those chores that never ends. If you let it pile up, it feels overwhelming—but if you have a simple system, it becomes just another easy part of your week. A weekly laundry routine is the secret to staying on top of clothes, linens, and towels without ever feeling buried under heaps of laundry again.

Here’s how to set up a laundry system that works every single week.

Step 1: Choose Your Laundry Schedule 🗓️

First, decide if you prefer to do one big laundry day or spread it out across the week.

  • One-Day Method: Dedicate a weekend morning or weekday evening to tackling all loads back-to-back.

  • Spread-Out Method: Do one type of laundry per day (e.g., towels Monday, clothes Tuesday, bedding Wednesday).

Pick the option that fits your lifestyle best—you’ll be more likely to stick with it.

Step 2: Sort Smartly Before Wash Day ✨

Instead of sorting right before washing, set up separate hampers for:

  • Lights/whites

  • Darks/colours

  • Towels/linens

  • Delicates

This way, your laundry is pre-sorted as the week goes on. When it’s time to wash, you can just grab a basket and go.

Step 3: Make Laundry Day Automatic 🧺

When it’s laundry time, don’t just start one load and forget it. Get into the rhythm:

  1. Start a load as soon as you wake up (or get home from work).

  2. Move it to the dryer or hang it up right away.

  3. Immediately start the next load if you have one.

Think of it like a cycle—you’re always moving laundry along, so nothing sits wet and forgotten.

Step 4: Fold & Put Away Immediately 🧴

The secret to never having piles of clean clothes on your chair or bed? Put laundry away as soon as it’s dry.

  • Fold or hang items right out of the dryer.

  • Store like with like (jeans together, shirts together).

  • Involve the family: give everyone their own basket to put away.

This step saves more time than it takes.

Step 5: Add Linens & Towels to the Routine 🛏️

Clothes aren’t the only laundry that needs attention. Build these into your weekly plan:

  • Towels: Wash every 3–4 days if possible.

  • Sheets & pillowcases: Once a week.

  • Blankets/comforters: Every 2–3 weeks.

  • Kitchen cloths: At least once a week, more if used daily.

A set schedule keeps your home feeling fresher and healthier.

Step 6: Keep Laundry Supplies Organised 🧼

Create a laundry station with everything in reach:

  • Detergent & stain remover

  • Dryer sheets or wool balls

  • Mesh bags for delicates

  • Small basket for items that need repair or special care

A tidy laundry area makes the process smoother and less frustrating.

Step 7: Do a Weekly Reset ✨

At the end of each week, double-check that:

  • Hampers are empty.

  • Linens and towels are fresh.

  • Clothes are folded and put away.

This weekly reset means you never start the next week behind.

Laundry doesn’t have to feel like an endless burden. With a weekly routine, you’ll keep clothes, towels, and linens fresh without last-minute scrambles. Whether you choose one laundry day or spread it out across the week, the key is consistency. Once laundry becomes part of your rhythm, you’ll always stay on top of it.
