Today I will share with you how to make an easy peasy farmhouse ladder. It fits just right in my cabin, and can be used in the bedroom as a blanket ladder, in the living room as decor, or as a towel ladder in the bathroom.
- One Piece of 1″ thick by 6″ wide wood (you can choose the length you desire)
- Twenty 1 1/4″ screws
How To Make It
Split the piece of 1″x6″ wood down the middle.
Cut both pieces of wood down the middle to end up with 4 pieces of wood this time. Two pieces will make the sides of your ladder. Cut four 18″ pieces from the other 2 pieces of wood. These will be the shelves of your ladder.
Lay out the ladder with the two side pieces and the four shelves.
Use two screws at both sides of each shelf to connect the sides to the shelves. Two screws will help your ladder to be sturdy.
This is how the ladder should be looking at this stage.
There should be some wood left over to make the X design on the ladder. Cut two thin strips that measure…. and lay them out in an X design at the back of the ladder between the second and third shelves.
Cut off a small triangle from both ends on the two strips that will make the X so that they fit properly without protruding. Use a pencil to make the mark at all the ends and then cut like in the photo below.
Each end should look like the example in the photo above after cutting.
Make an indent in the middle of the two strips so that they will fit with each other. The photo above shows an example.
Both pieces of strip should have an indentation in the middle like in the photo below.
Position the two pieces of strips where the indentations meet and fit them together.
Put them in place on the ladder to make the X.
Use a screw at the ends to connect them to the ladder. You will be screwing the ends down right behind the ends of the second and third shelves.
Voila 🙂 A beautiful rustic farmhouse ladder.
Do let me know if you try this project and how it turned out 🙂
